In the franchise's storyline, two men have taken on the identity of Sub-Zero. The first was Bi-Han, a major rival of Scorpion and responsible for his death. The second is his brother, Kuai Liang. Both are members of the Lin Kuei, a Chinese ninja clan from Outworld. During the tournament, Bi-Han was killed by a vengeful Scorpion and resurrected as a ninja specter. The cycle of vengeance continues when Kuai Liang, who also controls the cold element, takes his brother's place as the second Sub-Zero to eliminate Scorpion.

With his ability to control cold temperatures and ice in various ways, the ninja in blue and black attire is ready to fight and play, holding a classic frozen joystick in his right hand and ready to throw an ice ball with his left.
